Description

Formerly a large detached house, now divided into two residences, Forwood West and Forwood East, dates to the mid- to late 17th century and was substantially enlarged and restored in the early to mid-19th century for the Playne family. The construction incorporates random rubble limestone, with a roughcast finish on the front and stone slate roofing. The building is two storeys with an attic. The front facade features four parapet gables, with three aligned to the right forming a symmetrical arrangement around a smaller central gable. This central gable contains a doorway with a two-light mullioned casement above, and a small niche in the gable apex, topped with a ball finial. Canted bay windows are present beneath the outer pair of gables, featuring three-light upper floor and two-light attic mullioned casements, likely replacements from the 19th century. Another gable is on the left side, exhibiting a mix of 19th-century window styles. A flat-roofed addition connects to a gabled wing on the right. There is a prominent set of five ridge chimneys, each with paired shafts and combined moulded caps with tapering square stone pots. The ends of the building are parapet-gabled. The rear of the property exhibits various gabled wings. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to have undergone significant alterations in the 19th century.
