Description

The Shard is a detached house dating from the late 17th century, which was altered and enlarged in 1923 by Thomas Falconer. The building features random rubble and coursed limestone, with rubble and ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high with an attic and has two rear wings.

The front of the house has a four-window arrangement, all featuring two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements, with two of these being 20th-century replacements. There is a continuous dripmould at the ground floor level. The central doorway is a 20th-century addition, complete with a flat stone porch hood supported by shaped brackets and double panelled doors. The eaves have deep plaster coving beneath the hipped roof, which was rebuilt in 1923, likely replacing an original gabled roof. A central gabled dormer with leaded casement is also present.

On the east end, there is mullioned fenestration on the 20th-century rear wing, which features an oval window in the gable. The west end has a single-window arrangement similar to the front, with a hoodmould at the ground floor that extends around from the front. A projecting rear chimney gable has a shaft with a moulded cap, which is partially obscured by the 20th-century rear wing that contains the entrance hall and staircase. The interior was not inspected but is noted to have been entirely rebuilt in 1923.
