Description

The Congregational Church and adjoining schoolroom in Frampton-on-Severn is a Grade II listed building. Originally established as an Independent Meeting House in 1760, the church was completed in 1776 under the influence of the evangelical preacher Rowland Hill. It underwent alterations in 1849 when the schoolroom was added. The building is constructed of brick, set on a slag block plinth, and features a tiled roof with coped verges and kneelers. There is a brick dentil eaves course with a stepped two-brick string course below.

The structure consists of a double range, with a small single-storey schoolroom to the northwest that has a slate roof. The church originally had long round-headed windows, which have been altered to pointed arches with Y-tracery on the sides. There are two windows at the rear and on the right-hand side, along with a smaller similar window at the front. The schoolroom also has small windows at the back and front, and it features a small projecting gabled porch with a plank door and an oval stone above, inscribed "ERECTED/ BY VOLUNTARY / CONTRIBUTIONS / JUNE 1849". A small single-storey later wing at the front is not of special interest. The diagonal plank door has a large moulded flat wooden hood and a central vertical strut. Inside, the church retains its gallery, pews, and reading desk, which likely date from 1849.
