Description

Combe House is a detached house dating from the 17th century, constructed from squared and coursed limestone with a stone slate roof. It is designed as a cross passage house, possibly with a later addition on the right end, but maintains consistent architectural details. The building features two storeys, an attic, and part of a cellar.

The front elevation includes two windows and a door arrangement with two 3-light chamfered mullion casements, which have a continuous string course above the ground floor windows. The original stepped arrangement over the door has been modified. On the ground floor, there is a 2-light chamfered mullion casement with a stepped hood, and a hipped dormer with a 4-light casement on the far left. A plank door in a chamfered surround with a later gabled canopy is situated between the light casements. To the left, there is a single-storey garage extension.

The right side of the house has a mix of 2-light and 3-light casements with stepped hoods, as well as a 2-light window without a hood in the basement. The rear includes a 3-light casement, while the left return features a 2-light recessed chamfered casement.

Inside, the house has a stone flagged through-way, various chamfered and stopped beams, and well-crafted panelled fielded doors. Some of the plank doors on the first floor may date back to the 17th century. The roof structure is an A-frame with two purlins and some original rafters. There is a spiral staircase, a large bressummer fireplace on the ground floor to the right, and two notable stone fireplaces with moulded overmantels on the first floor.
