Description

The group of eight Paul family monuments is located in the churchyard of North Woodchester, approximately 20 metres west of the entry steps. These monuments date from the late 17th century to the early 19th century and are made of limestone, arranged within a stone-kerbed enclosure.

The largest chest tomb features narrow moulded trefoil-headed lancet panelling on its sides and ends, each with a moulded panel. The inscriptions are illegible but likely commemorate Sir George Onesephorus Paul, who died in 1820. Another tomb has gadrooned corner balusters and is inscribed to Margaret Paul, though the date is not clear. There is also a tomb with plain ends and restored sides that lacks inscriptions.

One tomb includes corner and side pilasters with a heraldic cartouche on the west end, dedicated to Francis, son of Onesephorus and Catherine Paul, dated 1739. Another features oval side panels with gadrooned enrichment, inscribed to Anna Merrick, who died in 1751. There is a tomb with gadrooned corner balusters and end cartouches, inscribed to an individual with the surname Brown, but the date is not legible. Finally, a tall tomb showcases egg and dart and gadrooning on its side panels with ovals, inscribed to Sir Onesephorus Paul, Baronet, who died in 1774.
