Description

Brookside, originally Iles’s Mill, is a detached house dating to the late 17th century with additions circa 1730. It is constructed of coursed rubble and ashlar limestone, with ashlar and artificial stone rebuilt chimneys and a stone slate roof. The house is three storeys with two-storey additions. The east front presents a symmetrical facade with three windows of mullioned leaded iron casements, all two-light. A dripmould runs along the ground floor, and separate hoodmoulds are above the upper floor windows. The central doorway has a moulded surround and a six-panel door. Gabled end chimneys are present. Two small gabled wings balance the east front; each has coved stone eaves and a segmental arched upper floor window with a keyed moulded architrave and bull-nosed sill. The left wing has a 24-pane sash window, while the right wing’s window is blocked. A lower screen wall extends to the left with an oval arched opening, now blocked. The north side features a gable end doorway to the original house with eared architraves and an elaborate shell hood on carved brackets, currently with a 20th-century glazed door. A wing added circa 1730 includes three windows, all 19th-century four-pane sashes within keyed architraves. The west side reveals a central rear stair wing with a hipped roof and a 12-pane sash window. A lean-to addition is situated to the right. The interior has not been inspected. An attached garden wall incorporates a square-headed doorway with an iron-railed gate and a round cart turning area, allowing exit from a mill track opposite.
