Description

Skaiteshill House is a detached house built around 1805, constructed from ashlar and coursed rubble limestone, with ashlar chimneys and a Welsh slate roof. The house features a three-storey central stair hall plan and a two-storey rear wing with an attic, which likely incorporates an earlier small house.

The south front has a symmetrical arrangement of windows with three tripartite sash windows in the middle and upper floors, flanked by plain openings. The central doorway is framed by detached columns with fluted capitals and has a projecting panelled entablature. The round-arched door opening contains double glazed doors and a decorative fanlight. The exterior also includes a plain plinth, bands at the upper floor level, and a modillion cornice with a low parapet. The sides of the house have two-window sash fenestration similar to the front, while the east-facing rear wing features mixed sash windows in segmental arched surrounds, a doorway with a flat hood on brackets, and a six-panel fielded door. There is also a single dormer mounted on the eaves.

Inside, the entrance hall is separated from the staircase by an arcade with detached columns and has fine doorcases leading to the principal rooms. The curved staircase, lit by an oval lantern, features stick balusters and a swept handrail. One of the rooms includes unusual corner pilasters and recent hand-painted wallpaper. The property also includes a coach house to the northeast, a garden wall with steps and a sundial to the west, and an entrance gateway, all set within landscaped gardens.
