PAINSWICK NEW STREET (south-east side) Two Gardner and one unidentified monuments c.4 m south-east of Holder monument in churchyard of the Church of St Mary

GV II

Two chest tombs and one headstone. Early C18. Limestone.

(a) Chest tomb, flat base to cyma edge, lyre ends - that to west badly broken - raised mould panels supported by flaming torches and emblems including skull; cavetto base. Elliptical south panel has some lettering, including Luke Gardner, 1729: he was a tallow chandler.

(b) chest tomb, flat table to cyma edge, lyre ends - that to west badly worn - bolection mould panels with supporting pilasters; base sink at time of survey (1984) not legible, but recorded in 1879 survey as Dorwood Gardner, 1717, aged 8.

(c) Headstone, facing east, and immediately to east of (a). Cherub with wings and drapes to sunk square panel, some lettering but not decipherable.
