Description

The L-shaped range of buildings associated with Dunkirk Mills dates to 1741, with extensive rebuilding in 1798 and subsequent additions in 1805, 1818, 1821, 1827, and 1855, as indicated by datestones. The origins of the mills are likely older. The complex comprises a long, four-storey range divided into four sections, with cross wings at each end, and a tall, roughly central chimney on the west side. Three water wheels are said to remain. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar quoins. The southernmost block features two-light stone mullion windows with segmental heads, arranged 9 windows – crosswing – 2, and has an attic with large, gabled dormers under a roof of stone slate (partly tiled). The windows have small-pane casements. An adjacent six-window range is dated ‘P P 1818’ and includes a chimney and attic with three gabled dormers. It has a coped verge and a chimney with an open oval panel. A further seven-window range, dated 1798, features continuous blocked mansard lights and a slate roof. The most northerly section now has a flat roof, with five windows – crosswing dated 1855 – and an end bay. A four-window return and later brick extensions are present, along with a chimney. A small, single-storey blacksmith's shop extension adjoins the south end.
