Description
Brook Farmhouse is a large detached farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with a 19th-century wing. It is constructed of random rubble limestone, featuring ashlar chimneys and a clay plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has an L-shaped plan due to the two-storey wing, along with a further single-storey back wing at the angle.
The north front has a gable on the right, showing signs of a change in roof pitch. The upper floors have single-window fenestration, with each window being a 2-light chamfered mullioned casement topped with a hood mould. The ground floor features two tall casements from the 19th century, and a 20th-century plaque to the right reads: 'Brook Farm/SYLVANUS LYSONS CHARITY/1750 - 1982'. The left wing has a tall ground floor casement and a small casement in a louvred attic dormer.
On the west side, there is a 19th-century single-storey service wing that projects to the right, complete with a moulded gable end and a 20th-century chimney. The main range has scattered and altered fenestration to the left, with a three-window arrangement on the upper floor that includes a central single-light and two flanking 2-light casements, all with hood moulds. Below, there is a 20th-century open lean-to, and to the right, two 19th-century gabled roof dormers with barge boards are present, along with a tall ridge-mounted chimney featuring a moulded cap.
The south end of the farmhouse has a blank gable end, except for a tall off-centre ground floor casement and paired ridge-mounted chimneys with moulded caps. On the east side, the 19th-century wing projects to the right, showcasing single-window 2-light fenestration in the gable end, with a small casement in a louvred attic dormer on the south side. The back of the main range has a 3-light casement with a 2-light window above it. A curved projecting passage to the right provides access to a single-storey service room. The interior has not been inspected. Until recently, the farmhouse was owned by the Sylvanus Lysons Charity.
