Description
The John Baylis monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard approximately 20 meters north of the north aisle of the Church of St Mary. It commemorates John Baylis, a clothier, and dates from 1818. The monument is made of limestone and features a square pedestal with concave faces. It has a moulded capping to the frieze adorned with rosettes and triglyphs, along with two square Ionic fluted pilasters that are set on console bases; however, two of these pilasters are missing. The monument includes raised inscription panels, although some of the lettering has worn away. It stands on a raised square platform with a moulded base. Parts of the monument, particularly the panel on the north side, have suffered significant weathering.
