Description

Sam Scott's is a small detached house, originally a wheelwright's cottage, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of squared limestone rubble and features a concrete slate roof, with some stone slate at the back and tiles on the extreme left. The house has gable stacks and consists of two rooms, with a later extension to the left and a possibly contemporary cider house at the back.

The building is two storeys high with an attic and a lower level floor at the back. The front facade includes a 2-light steel casement window to the left, followed by a 3-light chamfer-mullion casement window with early leading and stanchions. There is a near-central 20th-century glazed door beneath a plain stone lintel, and a central dormer featuring a 4-pane casement window. The right return has a 2-light steel casement window above a 3-light chamfer-mullion casement window with leading and stanchions, and to the right, there is a projecting bread oven. The back of the house has various steel casements, and to the right of center, there is a segmental-headed opening that leads to cellar steps.

Inside, the cottage features several rough chamfered and stopped beams, along with two bressummer fireplaces with stone cheeks, one of which in the right-hand room has been filled in. A spiral wooden stair leads from the left room. The cellar beneath the kitchen is made of good cut stone, with a low segmental stone vault and a stone stair that is blocked at the top. The roof structure consists of a double collar and two purlins. In the courtyard, there is a deep stone-lined well and a rebuilt surround for a horse trough. The cottage is reputed to have been in the Scott family as wheelwrights for several generations.
