Description
Splatt Bridge House is a bridgekeeper's house located at Splatt Bridge on the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. It was built in the early 19th century, possibly by Robert Mylne, who was the first principal engineer for the Gloucester and Berkeley Canal Company. The house is rendered with an artificial slate roof and features a small brick ridge stack.
It has a small cruciform shape with shallow pediments on each side, appearing as a single storey towards the canal and two storeys on the other sides. The main façade facing the canal is distinguished by two widely spaced fluted Doric columns set in antis, topped with a shallow pediment that has a plain frieze and cornice, and lacks bases. A probable original panelled door is located at the rear, though it is partially obscured by an additional sliding door. The building has a scattered fenestration that includes some 16-pane sash windows, and there is a lean-to structure at the rear.
Robert Mylne conducted survey work for the original canal route from Gloucester to Berkeley in 1793. In 1813, the terminal point was changed to Sharpness, and the canal officially opened in 1827.
