Description
This group of four monuments, mainly belonging to the Ricketts family, is located in the churchyard approximately 10 meters north-west of the tower of the former Church of St Peter. Dating from the early to mid-19th century, the monuments are made of sandstone and include three chest tombs and one pedestal tomb.
The three chest tombs are designed in the Neo-Greek style. Two of them feature antefixae at the corners of their tops and are inscribed to James Ricketts, who died in 1820, and Edward Ricketts, who died in 1856. The third chest tomb has a Vitruvian scroll frieze beneath a cornice top with weathered coping, inscribed to Edward Osborne, who died in 1862, as well as to later members of the Ricketts family.
The pedestal tomb is distinguished by its attached reeded corner columns, with the east and west sides bowed and featuring oval panels and paterae. It has a high domical coping on top, which originally had an urn finial, though the top of the urn had fallen off by the time of the survey in September 1986.
