Description
Six Hamlett monuments are located adjacent to the Gyde monument in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. These headstones date from the 18th century and are made of limestone. They form a close-set row of small memorials, featuring carved decoration along the edges and cherubs' heads in varying degrees of relief. Although the inscriptions are generally illegible, an earlier survey identified four of the stones as commemorating members of the Hamlett family. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Hamlett was known for signing many of the metal plates that were inset into ledger slabs in the churchyard. These well-preserved stones are made from limestone sourced from shelly beds, which were commonly used for bases and tables of chest tombs.
