Description
Grey Gables is a former lodge that has been converted into a detached house, built in 1885 by William Clissold for Edward Paul. The building is constructed of ashlar limestone and features ashlar chimneys and a Welsh slate roof. It has a single-storey, cruciform plan and is designed in the Italianate style.
The north and south ends have open pediments supported by Tuscan corner pilasters, which have paired shaped brackets above them. The pediment cornice also features brackets. There is an eared oculus with a fluted architrave, and a single keyed segmental arched sash window at the north end, which has moulded architraves, imposts, and a bracketed sill. At the south end, there is a moulded round arched recess with a tripartite sash window.
On the west side, a central projection has a low-pitched gable with a projecting bracketed verge and an oculus with an eared and fluted architrave. The facade features banded rustication below the impost level moulded bands, with a central rusticated round arched recess containing paired round arched sashes with moulded architraves and bracketed sills. There is also a single keyed segmental arched sash window in the plain outer parts of the facade. The rear elevation is plainer but has similar fenestration to the central projection, with two small gables at the outer ends.
Two ridge-mounted chimneys each have paired columnar shafts with moulded caps and bases, as well as a mid-height rustication band. The interior has not been inspected. Grey Gables was originally built as a lodge to Rodborough Manor, and railings and a gateway stand alongside Bath Road.
