Description
The Woodchester War Memorial, built in 1920 and restored in 2010, is made from local Minchinhampton limestone. It features a freestanding wheel-cross atop a tapering column, which stands on a square base with three square steps beneath it. The base is inscribed with the text: REMEMBER/1914 – 1919, and lists the names of 19 fallen soldiers in two columns. Below this, the word FELL is also inscribed. The lower step bears the inscription 1939 – 1945, along with the names of 8 fallen soldiers from the Second World War. The left side of the lower step is chipped, and all text has been painted in black. Surrounding the memorial is a high dry-stone wall that extends along the road on either side. Behind the memorial, a bank of land with established trees rises above the structure and the road.
