Description

Upper Lodge is a detached lodge house dating from the late 19th century, likely designed by Waller and Son for Thomas Dyer Edwardes. It is constructed of rock-faced coursed limestone with ashlar dressings, timber framing with roughcast infill, and features rock-faced chimneys with moulded ashlar caps, topped with a clay plain tile roof. The building is a single storey with an attic and cellar, presenting a picturesque appearance.

On the southeast side, which faces the road, there is an off-centre gabled projection that combines a porch with a timber-framed bay window featuring high-level leaded casements. There is also a leaded casement in the framed gable, with segmental-headed casements to the left and right of the bay. A tall ridge-mounted chimney is positioned to the left of the gable. The northeast end showcases timber framing in the attic of the gable end and has single casement windows. The northwest side features timber framing in the attic, a central projecting gable with a leaded attic casement, an eaves-mounted chimney to the left, a gabled roof dormer to the right, and segmental-headed casements on the ground floor and cellar. The southwest end also has timber framing in the attic of the gable end and single casement windows.

An attached dry stone wall connects to plain ashlar gate piers topped with ball finials. The property is accessed through iron spear-topped gates that include a single intermediate horizontal scroll band. The lodge is built into the side of a hill, with a steep drop through beech woods, contributing to its important landscape value. It serves as one entrance to St. Peter's Grange, Prinknash Park.
