Description
South Lodge, built around 1800 and extended in the mid-19th century, is a lodge made of limestone ashlar with a pyramidal slate roof and stone lateral stacks. It has a two-unit plan and is two stories high with a three-window range. The main front faces the drive and features a central panelled door set in a shallow porch supported by slender Tuscan columns and an entablature. On the ground floor, there are two-light casement windows on either side of the door with segmental-arched heads. The first floor has pointed arch-shaped windows, also with two-light casement windows. The building includes a plinth, pilaster strips at the corners and defining the bays, sill bands, and overhanging bracketed eaves. A large Italianate-style extension was added to the rear in the mid-19th century. The lodge is also referred to as the Gardener's Cottage.
Attached to the lodge is a railing that extends from the left corner to the gate and gatepiers, with similar railing on the other side of the gate. The wrought-iron railings feature ornamented cresting and standards, or low stone-coped walls. The gatepiers are made of plain limestone ashlar with a moulded cornice and ball finials, supporting a modern five-bar timber gate. Inside, the lodge contains a fine mid-18th century fireplace, which likely came from Easton Maudit House.
