Description

The gates, gatepiers, and balustrading at the forecourt of Castle Ashby were designed by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt in 1865 for the 3rd Marquis of Northampton. They are made of limestone, terracotta, and wrought iron. The structure features lavish gates and gatepiers at either end of a low retaining wall. The gatepiers are crafted from terracotta in an early Renaissance style and are topped with cherubs holding cartouches of arms, with a marquis coronet above. There are lower pedestrian gates flanking the main gates, which are made of ornamental wrought iron, along with scrolled railings on either side. The low stone parapet wall has terracotta coping and urns on the piers.
