Description
The barn and attached outbuildings at Tocknell's Court are a group of structures dating from the early 18th century. They are built from dressed squared limestone and feature stone slate roofs, with glazed double Roman tiles on the dovecote sections. The central barn has a deep projecting cart entry that is faced in horizontal boarding, flanked by outshut roofs that have a slightly steeper pitch. To the left is a long stable block, and to the right is a two-storey block with pigeon openings. The barn spans the end of a deep narrow courtyard and has a pair of large board doors, with the boarding extending into the gable and partly into the attached outshuts.
Each side of the barn features three small oculi with floating cornices, with the lower two on each side having stone pigeon perches. There are also large plank doors on the left and right, set within ovolo-mould stone surrounds. The left wing has a flight of eight stone steps leading to a landing, which connects to a cross-gablet unit with a plank door in an ovolo-mould stone surround. The outer gable has a large glazed oculus above a large plank door, also in an ovolo-mould stone surround. The right wing has a similar cross-gable, accessed by a flight of fifteen steps to a landing. To the left of this wing is a door and a two-light ovolo-mould opening beneath a stepped continuous hood, while to the right is a three-light ovolo-mould casement with a stopped drip. The gable features six rows of square pigeon openings with ledges, along with a single row at the eaves on either side.
The gable end facing the house includes an open cart shed at ground level. The barn consists of five bays and has a 20th-century roof following a mid-20th-century fire, with various ventilation slits and a flush opening on the far side. The stable block contains some stalls and retains its hay-loft floor supported by a heavy structure. The entire group remains largely unmodified, except for the barn roof, and serves as an important adjunct to Tocknell's House.
