Description
West Downs School War Memorial is a First World War memorial featuring a sculpture by Lady Kathleen Scott, built after 1919 and altered after the Second World War. It is located within the grounds of Slimbridge Wetlands Centre.
The memorial consists of a bronze statue of a nude boy with his right arm outstretched, positioned on a tall, square pedestal made of Portland stone that has a moulded top. The front face of the pedestal displays the inscription "HERE AM I / SEND ME / 1914 – 1918," along with the names of 38 former pupils of West Downs School who died in the First World War. The other faces of the pedestal list the 81 names of those who fell in the Second World War, under the inscription "1939 – 1945."
