Description
The war memorial, designed by George Mawbey in 1920, is made of limestone ashlar and features a bronze plaque along with slate panels. It takes the form of a cenotaph and is set on a stepped plinth. The front displays two slate panels inscribed with the names of 133 fallen soldiers from the Old Boys of Bridge Road School, which was demolished in the 1980s. Above these panels, four brackets that resemble a cross support an unusual plaque depicting three nude figures in relief. The imagery includes two kneeling boys, one of whom holds a wreath over the body of a young man, symbolizing the individuals honored by the memorial. The memorial was financed through voluntary contributions from former pupils and teachers of the school, and the designer was also a former pupil. This well-crafted memorial, with its distinctive iconography and the poignant subject matter, serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of the First World War.
