Description

The building is a former police station, previously serving as a combined police and fire station with two attached houses and a lamp room, dating to 1899. It was designed by Arthur Wakerley. The construction is primarily red brick with painted ashlar dressings and Westmorland slate roofs, featuring two gable and two ridge stacks.

The building has a ten-window front arranged in a 1:2:3:4 configuration. The former police station occupies the right-hand side and features an off-centre doorway with a six-panel door and plain fanlight within a moulded, round-headed surround. To its right are two cross mullion windows with glazing bar upper lights, with a blind window containing a carved coat of arms in the upper light. To the left of the doorway is a single cross mullion window incorporating a doorway and a six-panel door, providing access to the original lamp room. All windows are consistent in their detailing, featuring moulded impost and cill bands and a continuous entablature. The projecting doorway surround extends above with a broad panel, a sash with a keystone and scrolled ashlar sides that break through the eaves to create an entablature, and a small round-headed gable. Either side of the doorway is a single sash window, and to the left, a further sash window, all with glazing bar upper lights.

The former sergeant's house projects slightly and includes a round-headed doorway with a six-panel door and a four-light fanlight, sheltered by a moulded, round-arched hood supported on brackets. A large canted bay window is positioned to the left, incorporating a central two-light cross mullion window and single side lights, all with glazing bar upper lights. Above, three sash windows are aligned with continuous cills, an impost band, and lintels. A large gable is surmounted by ashlar bands and a plaque inscribed "1899".

The former fireman's cottage is located on the left-hand side and has a doorway with a six-panel door and an ashlar lintel. To the left is a cross mullion window with glazing bar upper lights, also with a lintel band. Above are two sash windows with glazing bar upper lights. The former fire station projects slightly and is single-storey plus attic. To the left is a large, segment-headed moulded arch with four-light glazed doors. To the right is a doorway with double part-glazed doors set beneath a segmental arch with a carved tympanum and moulded arch. Both doorways are flanked by short Doric pilasters and have an entablature at impost level. Above this is a further entablature topped by a banded gable featuring a central circular window in a moulded surround with keystone.
