Description
The former mill building at New Mills, located west of Bushford Bridge, is an early 19th-century structure currently being converted into industrial premises for Renishaw Electrical. It is built of brick with freestone quoins and decorative brick panels, topped by a hipped slate roof. The building is a very large single range, rising four storeys with a basement and attic, and features 17 bays. The windows are mostly fixed lights set under segmental brick arches, with 16-pane windows on the ground and first floors, 12-pane windows on the second and third floors, and fourteen 8-pane dormers with a segmental roofline. Each bay and floor is adorned with round tie bar ends featuring a star motif.
There is a nearly central projecting bay made of different brick, possibly added in the later 19th century, which also stands four storeys high and has similar windows. This bay includes a clock face on a large stone-coped ogee gable to the east, along with a decorative side eaves frieze made of diagonally set bricks. A weathervane remains at the top of the gable. At the rear of this bay, there is a very large rectangular brick industrial chimney with slightly sloping sides and oversailing brick courses. On the ground floor to the left of the projecting bay, there are two door openings. The building was under extensive restoration at the time of the survey in January 1985, and the interior was not accessible.
