Description
Breast Mill, located on Newliston Road in Kirkliston, is a substantial former mill dating from the 17th century and later, now converted into a residential property. The building features a three-storey, L-shaped layout, with a single-storey lean-to that completes the plan in the outer re-entrant angle. It is constructed from rubble with squared margins and dressed quoins.
The west range includes a slightly lower square-plan entrance wing with two bays facing south towards the re-entrant angle. This wing has a broad doorway and a tall window on the first floor to the right of the door, along with a small window located under the eaves above the door. A similar window is found at eaves level on the west elevation. The roof is piended with an easing course at the eaves.
The principal range is gabled and features a door on the outer left of the south elevation, which has chamfered arrises and a stone lintel inscribed with "16 JD ER 72" (though weathered). There is a new double door opening to the right, which was originally a window opening. The centrally placed first and second-floor windows have stugged margins with chamfered arrises. The remains of a hoist mechanism can be seen over the large first-floor window. The west elevation has two bays with small windows at the ground and second floors, and a tall rectangular window at the first floor in the outer bay. A cast iron tie-plate is present at the first floor.
The east range consists of two three-storey bays to the left and a single-storey slated lean-to in the re-entrant angle to the right. The wall projects below the large first-floor window to the left, indicating the site of a former water wheel. The building features modern windows, with tall windows that were once hoist openings. The roof is covered with red pantiles, complemented by slate eaves easing courses, and the gables are crowstepped with beak skewputts and a skewblock at the southeast corner.
