Description
The Still House, Kirkliston Distillery, is a mid-19th to early 20th century grain processing block and associated structures, originally part of a whisky distillery complex. It comprises a granary, a pair of malt barns, a double kiln, a deposit store, ancillary ranges forming a courtyard, and a later red sandstone production block with an industrial chimney. A 5-stage still house with a pyramidal roof adjoins the production block. The buildings are constructed of coursed sandstone and sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and have predominantly slate roofs.
The granary, located at the western end of the grain processing range, is a late 19th or early 20th century tall gabled malt barn, oriented north-south, with a gabled grain elevator housing set into the ridge. It features blind panels resembling a Venetian window on the south elevation, a lean-to to the west, a window in the north gable, and three catslide dormers on each roof pitch. It adjoins the narrow ends of the malt barns to the north and east. One malt barn, likely mid-19th century, is a single-storey, basement 9-bay range with a piended roof at the west end. Later, a coped gable truncates the east end, where the block does not adjoin the kiln. The other malt barn is dated 1914 and is a rendered two-storey, six-bay range with a lean-to and a six-bay section rising to two and a half storeys, featuring a gabled dormer and a tower-like structure, probably formerly housing an elevator, to the rear. This adjoins the double kiln to the east.
The double kiln, likely late 19th century, is a four-storey structure oriented north-south, with a tall piended roof and paired pagoda ventilators. It adjoins the deposit store and ancillary ranges to the east. The mid-19th century deposit store, possibly incorporating earlier fabric, runs east-west along the north side of the block and has a gable end built up in brick. It features three catslide dormers on each roof pitch. An ancillary range, two stories and four bays, adjoins at right angles to the south, oriented north-south, with a gabled loading bay to the east and a piended roof to the south. A single and two-storey, nine-bay ancillary range, partly built up in brick and oriented east-west, extends along the south side of the block and to the east of the production block, with two loading doors to the two-storey section.
The mid to later 19th century still house is a five-stage, square-plan tower with a pyramidal roof and a louvred ventilator, with altered openings mainly to the south and west elevations. The interiors were not inspected in 1998.
