Description

The Smithy located at 5A Newliston Road in Kirkliston Village is an early 19th century building. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure with a gabled, rectangular plan and a taller half-pitched, two-bay addition to the west. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone, featuring dressed quoins and margins, with raised cills.

On the north elevation, the bays are grouped towards the centre, featuring an off-centre two-leaf door with a droved margin, flanked by 16-pane sash and case windows. The taller bays to the west include a simple boarded door with a three-pane letterbox fanlight above, and a fixed six-pane window to the right.

The south and east elevations are blank. The west elevation has a two-bay, undressed window at the centre with wooden jambs and a lintel, and a boarded door to the right with a droved margin.

The roof is slate with a pitched ridge ventilator. Inside, there is a heavy wooden boarded floor and exposed roof timbers. At the east end, there is a large lean-to brick forge, which is now operated mechanically, along with the remains of a forge at the west end.

Surrounding the property is a boundary wall made of rubble, featuring semi-circular coping that curves around the area of the blacksmith's court.
