Description
The Smithy at Crofts of Dipple is a mid-19th century building with later additions. It is a single-storey structure with a rectangular plan, constructed from pink sandstone rubble with some remnants of harling and slate lintel facings.
The southeast elevation features five bays, with doorways located in the outer left and centre bays. The doors are boarded, with the centre door being split. There are blocked windows in the bays flanking the centre doorway, and a wider window is positioned in the outer right bay.
The northeast and southwest elevations are blank. The northwest elevation is obscured by adjoining timber sheds, which include a larger shed on the outer left with boarded timber walls and a corrugated asbestos roof, and a smaller lean-to shed adjoining to the right. There is a remaining small-pane fixed window with a timber panel below it. The roof is a grey slate piended design with stone ridge coping and three tall brick slates.
Inside, the smithy contains three stone hearths, with bellows still present at the hearth on the southwest wall. The interior also features timber racks, peg-racks, workbenches, cupboards, and shelves, all set on an earth floor.
