Description
The Wool Loft, formerly known as Newman's Wool Warehouse, is a building dated to around 1726, located on Chestnut Hill. It is three and a half storeys high, constructed of coursed, dressed, and squared rubble, and features a stone tile roof. The north-west front has three gables, each adorned with two-light chamfered mullion windows and drips. The window arrangement below has been altered, with three windows on the second floor featuring a common label, a blocked 19th-century opening to the left, a two-light window in the centre, and a four-light window to the right. The first floor has four windows, including three and four-light mullion casements, some of which are partly blocked, with only one retaining its label. A modern lean-to on the ground floor obscures the datestone and various openings. The rear of the main part has saddlestones on the gables, one of which includes a pigeon-loft. To the east, there is a three-storey, two-window extension from the 19th century, built of rubble with a slate roof and cambered brick heads above the windows. Inside, the loft showcases the roof carpentry, which is a good example of cross gables with collars resting on the gables.
