Description
Stokes Croft is a building dating from around 1700, possibly incorporating parts of an earlier house. It is a notable example of a gabled Cotswold house, constructed from rubble stone and topped with a Cotswold stone roof. The building has three attic gables featuring small oval windows and stands three storeys high with five windows. The windows are thick glazing bar sashes set in moulded stone architraves that include keystones, stone cills, block corners, and continuous dripmoulds. The doorway is framed by a moulded stone architrave and features a fine shell hood supported by brackets, along with a studded door that has a glazed panel. There is a fretted lead gutter head and original decorated lead rainwater heads. An L-plan extension includes two 2-light mullion windows with a common label. The rear has two plus one gables, with the middle gable containing an original mullion window. There is also a basement doorway. Inside, the building features a well-preserved original staircase with twisted balusters on a straight string, panel newels with ball finials, and a panelled dado. The hall fireplace is adorned with a bolection surround, and there is some panelling present.
