Description
Melksham Court is a manor house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is constructed of squared and coursed marlstone with a stone slate roof and has an L-shaped plan, featuring a later wing at the north end. The east side has three gables, while the west front displays two gables and a third gabled wing that projects forward. There is a through passage between the first and second gables on the west front.
The west facade, which has coped gables, rises four storeys and is arranged with windows in a pattern of 4, 3, 2, and 1-light hollow chamfered mullion casements beneath moulded and stopped drips, most of which have leaded glazing. There are also various smaller openings, including a stair light, and small square openings to the basement on the return wing. A mid-20th century glazed door and canopy are present. On the east side, there is a mid-20th century panelled door set in a restored surround with a stopped drip. The lower service wing at the north end is generally in keeping with the main block.
The interior has not been seen but is said to contain various original staircases along with much replacement panelling and other details from a substantial restoration around 1955. Melksham Court was the home of the Tyndale family from 1561 to 1768 and then the Morse family until the early 20th century. The house is surrounded by formal gardens and is a grand example of the Cotswold style, grouped with the Barn and Mill.
