Description
Friends Burial Ground is a former burial site established in 1658, located off Beech Lane in Painswick. The burial ground is enclosed by a drystone limestone wall, which varies in height from 1 meter to 1.5 meters. The enclosure measures approximately 17 by 10 meters and features some weathered stone coping on the west and south sides, as well as large slabs on the north side.
On the west side, there is a large stone stile slab set into the wall, with the back inscribed "MM-708," likely indicating the year 1708. The front of the stile is approached by three concrete block stops that are 2 meters wide and support a cast iron plaque that reads "Friends Burial Ground 1658." Inside the enclosure, there are six ledger slabs and two coffin stones, all showing signs of inscriptions, although these are no longer legible. This burial ground is a significant historical site, situated away from regular access in the area.
