Description

Turnstone House is a detached house dating from the 17th and 19th centuries. Originally known as Woodville, the house is constructed of coursed and squared limestone with a concrete tile roof. The building is composed of two distinct sections. The left-hand section is a two-storey and attic block with a late 19th-century façade and return. To the right, set within the same front plane, is a two-storey block with a lower roof profile. The front elevation features a central full-height gable with wavy bargeboards, containing three windows plus one, with a single light at the gable. At ground floor, there are two three-light casements with hood-moulds; the left-hand one has its central light extended to floor level. Four two-light casements are at the first floor, all stone-mullioned with small-pane casements, alongside a three-light wood-mullioned casement to the right. A two-light gabled dormer is positioned on the right side of the gable. The entrance comprises a four-panel flush door, with the top two panels glazed, set within a gable porch that was obscured by ivy during a survey in November 1984. The lower block has two-light wood casements with small panes. The return gable to the left features a two-storey canted bay with recessed chamfered mullion casements, the pattern being 1:2:1-lights, with a crenellated top below a two-light casement similar to that on the front elevation. An extended wall to the left includes a single recessed chamfer light above a 19th-century battened door, also with crenellated detailing. The rear elevation contains a central gable and swept down outshuts. An ashlar stack is located on the right gable, and a ridge stack sits to the left of the main gable. The interior was not inspected.
