Description
The stable block at Brook House is a detached structure dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is primarily built of limestone coursed rubble or near ashlar, with the upper level on the entry side featuring rendering marked out with masonry joints on a lath backing. The roof is made of profiled asbestos-cement sheet.
This attractive building has six bays on the entry side, which faces away from the street. Five of these bays are open, while one is closed off with a later ashlar block. The open bays are supported by five stone Roman Doric unfluted columns that carry very flat elliptical arches, which have marked voussoirs and a keystone, all framed between the end walls 'in antis'.
The upper floor includes a 20th-century glazed central opening flanked by two-light wood casements with segmental tops. The gable ends are plain but feature a recessed blank oculus in each gable. The street-facing side has a supporting plinth wall that steps down from approximately 2.2 meters to about 1.5 meters above the sloping road, and this wall carries a plain section with four blocked openings.
