Description
No. 5 Pitt Street is a house that has been converted into part of a public school boarding house. It is linked to and accessed from the adjacent Paddock House. The building dates from the late 18th century and has undergone minor alterations in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped tiled roof, a gabled roof dormer, and a brick chimney stack.
The house is a small block with a wing on the left that encloses a small forecourt with brick walls. It has two storeys and an attic. The main block and the wing to the left have a stone eaves cornice adorned with closely spaced modillions. The entrance doorway, which may have been added later, is located in the main block next to the wing. This doorway was originally within a single-storey porch, as indicated by scars on the wall. Above the doorway, there is a small side-hung sash window with glazing bars arranged in three by two panes.
On the front of the wing, each floor features a mid-19th century horned sash window with a central vertical glazing bar. These sashes are set in their original openings and have contrasting red brick quoins on the jambs, rubbed brick segmental-arched heads, and projecting sills. The dormer on the hipped roof of the wing has a pair of mid-19th century casement windows.
At the rear of the building, there is a sash window with glazing bars on the right side of each floor. On the left side of the first floor, there is a two-light timber-framed window, with each light containing a sash with glazing bars arranged in two by four panes. The interior retains some original joinery.
