Description

The remains of the former Infirmary of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter are located in the Cathedral Precincts of Gloucester. This structure dates back to the early 13th century. In the 17th century, the east end of the infirmary, which was previously St Bridget's Chapel, was demolished, and the west end was incorporated into a group of tenements known as Babylon. In 1860, these tenements were removed, revealing and consolidating the surviving 13th-century masonry.

The remains of the aisled infirmary hall include the lower part of the wall at the west end, six western bays of the south arcade, and two western piers of the former north arcade. On the exterior, the west wall features an entrance doorway with a moulded arch and a hoodmould. The piers of both arcades have attached shafts with fillets, and their capitals are either moulded or carved with stiff-leaf designs. The arches of the south arcade are elaborately moulded and framed by hoodmoulds with carved stops. Above the south arcade, the wall is topped by a 19th-century weathered capping with overhangs supported on corbels. The site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
