Description

The Byways is a detached house, now used as offices, built around 1818 with later alterations in the 20th century. The building is made of stuccoed brick and has a slate roof, featuring two brick stacks on each side wall. It is a rectangular double-depth structure that closes the vista at the eastern end of Spa Road. There is a small wing at the rear, while a former wing to the rear right was demolished around 1980.

The exterior has three storeys and a basement, with a symmetrical front that has three windows. It features an offset plinth, a raised band at the first-floor level, and a crowning bull-nose cornice with a parapet. The ground floor includes a flight of stone steps leading up to a central entrance porch, which is designed in the Ionic order with pairs of columns at the outer corners, pilasters at the rear, and an entablature with a pulvinated frieze. The entrance doorway has a semicircular arch with a fanlight that has radiating glazing bars, and a six-panel door with fielded panels.

On either side of the portico, there is a sash window, and on both the first and second floors, there are three sash windows, all featuring glazing bars (4x4 panes on the ground and first floors, and 4x3 panes in the shorter sashes on the second floor) in plain openings with projecting stone sills. The first floor also has a bow-fronted wrought-iron guard for the central window. The side and rear walls contain sashes of various sizes with glazing on each floor. The interior has not been inspected. Attached wrought-iron railings on a stone plinth date from the mid-20th century and are not included in the listing.
