Description
The walls surrounding the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew, with gates, are likely from the 19th century. They are constructed of sandstone rubble topped with saddle-back coping made from on-edge blocks, and feature iron gates. The walls form a complete, roughly oval circuit, with the Church of St Andrew located towards the west end. The walls vary in height but are generally around 1.5 metres tall. At the east end, there are a pair of square piers measuring approximately 620 millimetres square and 2.5 metres high, capped by low pyramids with roll moulding. This area includes a pair of gates with spearhead railings and, to their left, a pedestrian swing-gate enclosed by a half-circle rail. On the south side, opposite a later cemetery, there is a similar small iron gate, and directly across on the north side, there is another small pedestrian swing gate in a half-circle enclosure. At the west end, there is a round arched opening with a small diagonally-planked door, and the path here drops down, with the encircling wall rising to about 2.5 metres high. The shape of the circuit suggests it may have been a Celtic site.
