Description

The Dean Field Studies Centre is a former blowing engine house that has been used as a study centre since 1908. Built in 1849, it features coursed and dressed rubblestone with battered front and back walls, and a hipped slate roof. The building stands four storeys tall, with a central three-storey "porch" projection. It has three windows, including those in the porch, which contains twin wooden casements with two mullions above that form a ventilator. The porch is supported by two Tuscan columns and has a wooden frieze and cornice, with slate hung above and a hipped slate roof that also has overhanging eaves. The main structure is a single large rectangular range with lower extensions to the left and rear, which also feature a hipped slate roof and a large semi-circular window on the south side. Originally, the extensive furnaces at Parkend were powered by bellows driven by a 51-foot diameter waterwheel, and a 90 horsepower steam engine was added in 1849 for supplementary power.
