Description
The Church of St Paul is a church built in 1822 by Henry Poole. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof with gables that have saddle-back copings. The church has an octagonal shape with single-storey wings that form a cruciform layout, including a sanctuary and north and south transepts, along with a three-stage tower at the west end. The single-storey wings are supported by stepped diagonal buttresses topped with pinnacles. The west tower features an embattled parapet with stepped diagonal buttresses and additional pinnacles at the center of each side of the parapet. The tower has single lancet windows on the first and second stages, clock faces on the second stage facing south, west, and north, and a double lancet belfry stage, with all lancets having pointed hood moulds. The windows throughout the church are designed with 2 and 3-light Y tracery lancets.
Inside, the church has simple lancet panelled galleries in the transepts and an organ loft in the west, which houses an elaborate Gothick organ. There is a similarly styled pulpit and an intricate wooden reredos featuring pinnacles and the monogram "IHS" in open tracery within the central gable. The ceiling has a 12-rib vault formed by ridge and diagonal ribs that rise to a central boss. Henry Poole is also known for designing towers at Christchurch and the Market Place in Coleford, of which only the tower remains.
