Description
The monument to William Smart is a chest tomb located in the churchyard approximately 12 metres southeast of the southeast corner of the aisle of the Church of St Andrew. It dates from 1666 and is made of sandstone. The tomb features a thick flat top with a moulded edge and sunk enriched panels. The base was noted to be sunk at the time of the survey in September 1983. On the east end, there is heavy and crude raised lettering that reads 'AS 1666', while the west end displays 'WS 1680'. The tomb also features good capital lettering that includes 'William Smart 1680'. This monument is one of two significant early monuments, situated about 2 metres south of the monument to William Smart's daughter.
