Description

The Badger Monument is a rectangular pedestal tomb located in the churchyard about 8.5 meters northwest of the north porch of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. It dates from the late 18th century, probably 1781, and is made of stone. The tomb features a plain lid with a moulded edge and slightly indented corners on the sides.

On the north side, there is a circle with a raised, moulded edge and leaves in the corners. The south side has a raised panel with an inset segmental top, flanked by flowers and pendants. The ends of the tomb have elongated pilasters with fluted capitals and a moulded base. The shaft is fluted on the short returns, with a circle featuring a raised moulded edge on the west side and a sunk panel on the east side.

Inscriptions are present on all faces of the monument. The earliest inscription is for Thomas Badger, who died in 1781, and his wife. The lettering includes some italic styles with flourishes that show signs of black paint. Additional inscriptions are for William Badger, who died in 1793, and his wife, who died in 1832, with long s's appearing in her inscription.
