Description
The barn located about 35 metres west of Hewelsfield Court is a detached structure dating from the 18th century. It is built from roughly coursed sandstone and has a corrugated asbestos cement roof. The barn features five bays and has a deep projecting cart entry on the east side, facing the house, along with a return arm that is separately constructed and open at the house end, creating an L-shape.
The main barn includes a large cart opening with a slightly cambered arch made of voussoirs and a key, situated above a wooden lintel. There is also a row of ventilation slots with holes approximately 800mm square above. The cart porch has a roof that is lower than the main ridge and features old plank doors leading to another wooden lintel. Inside, the barn has a collar and tie 2-purlin strutted roof.
The return arm consists of three bays and has a large rectangular loading opening in the gable end facing the church, along with various ventilation slots and patched openings at the upper level. This barn is connected to an earlier barn, which was formerly a house, by an eaves-height wall, creating a forecourt for Hewelsfield Court.
