Description
HEWELSFIELD GENERAL SO 50 SE 6/24 Boundary wall, lych gate and stiles to churchyard to church of St Mary Magdalen GV II Churchyard boundary wall with lych gate and stiles. Undated, C20 lych. Surrounding wall is rough squared drystone rubble without capping or coping, varying in height from c800mm to 1.5m, containing to east and south built-in upright sandstone slab stiles approached externally by rough stone steps; a third stile may be located to north, but here the walling overgrown with ivy at time of survey, December 1983. Main entrance, from west, through wide gabled lych gate in coursed stone with stone slate roof carried across opening on deep wood lintols to brackets on stone corbels, pair of wood gates and a small swing gate, to left of and outside main construction. This is an example of the roughly oval enclosure, probably indicating a Celtic site, and similar to that at the Church of St Andrew, Woolaston (qv). It is included principally for this historic interest.
