Description

The boundary wall, lych gate, and stiles to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary Magdalen are notable features from the 20th century. The churchyard wall is made of rough squared drystone rubble, lacking capping or coping, and varies in height from approximately 800mm to 1.5m. To the east and south, there are built-in upright sandstone slab stiles, which can be accessed via rough stone steps. A third stile may exist to the north, but at the time of the survey in December 1983, this area was overgrown with ivy.

The main entrance is located on the west side and features a wide gabled lych gate constructed from coursed stone, topped with a stone slate roof. The roof is supported by deep wooden lintels resting on brackets that sit on stone corbels. There are a pair of wooden gates and a small swing gate located to the left and outside the main structure. This site is an example of a roughly oval enclosure, likely indicating a Celtic origin, and is similar to the enclosure at the Church of St Andrew in Woolaston. The boundary wall, lych gate, and stiles are included in the register primarily for their historical significance.
