Description
The Lych Gate and south boundary wall located in the churchyard of St Mary in Compton Pauncefoot is a boundary wall and gate structure. The wall is likely from the 19th century, while the lych gate dates to the early 20th century. It is constructed from local stone that has been cut and squared, with Cary stone ashlar used for the gate. The gateway features a hipped stone tile roof supported by an oak frame. The wall averages 1 meter in height and runs along the entire south boundary. The gate is positioned near the south-east corner and is set on stone walls that are at right angles to the boundary wall. It has a heavy pegged oak frame that supports a stone slate roof with almost bell-hip curves and a generous overhang, topped with a cross finial at the ridge. Between the stone bases, there is a pair of panelled oak gates that are about 1 meter high. This gate serves as a memorial to both World Wars, and together with the boundary wall, it significantly enhances the setting of the Church of St Mary and contributes to the street scene in this important part of the village.
