Description
Compton Cottage is a detached house dating to the late 17th century, with later modifications. It is constructed of Cary stone, squared and cut, with a double Roman clay tile roof, hipped at the angle and featuring stepped coped gables. Brick chimney stacks are present. The house has an L-shaped layout, spanning two storeys and incorporating attics, with three bays in each arm. The windows are horizontal bar casements under timber lintols. A projecting 20th-century bay window with a hipped plain tile roof is located in the lower bay of the east elevation. A small gable on the south side contains an early iron-framed casement with rectangular leaded lights, and a lean-to below this provides access through an entrance. The north elevation features horizontal bar casements of both three and two lights above, with French doors in the outer bays below. A late 20th-century stone and tile porch, incorporating a reused earlier 6-panel door with glazed toplights, sits centrally, topped with a small hipped dormer window.
Inside, several original features remain, including step-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, 18th-century 6-panel doors, window seats, and shutters. A late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters is present, exhibiting similarities to the detailing found at East Hall Farmhouse in Blackford.
