Description

The Old Rectory is a former rectory built in the mid-18th century, incorporating earlier elements. It features a facade of Cary stone ashlar, with cut and squared work elsewhere, and has a half-hipped plain clay tile roof. The building is in an L-plan and consists of two storeys with five bays. The central three bays project under a flat roof, which is topped with a plain parapet and moulded coping. The structure has a lias stone base, a plinth, and a cornice moulding on the central bays, along with rusticated quoins.

The windows are 2-light mullioned and architraved, with two 10-pane casements in the outer bays on both levels, two 5-pane casements in bays 2 and 4, and a 12-pane sash window in a keystoned architrave in the upper bay 3. The lower bay 3 features a wide 6-panel door in a keystoned architrave, which is set under an open pediment that encloses an urn. The west elevation has a gable end with a matching first-floor window and a 19th-century flat-roofed bay window below. There is also a 2-bay extension with architraved 12-pane sash windows. On the east gable, at first-floor level, there are remains of a Venetian window that is now blocked and partly obscured by a stable wing. The rear has various additions that incorporate relocated 17th-century mullioned windows.

Inside, the building has 18th-century staircases, with the lower flight possibly relocated. Regency detailing includes a Chippendale-style glazed cupboard in the hall and a fine southwest corner room featuring acanthus coving and plaster-panelled walls. The northwest room was refitted in the late 19th century, but only part of the interior has been inspected.
