Description

HEWELSFIELD BURNAGE ROAD SO 50 SE at NGR 577019 (north side) 6/257 Pair of lime kilns in Hewelsfield Cliff Wood - II Pair of lime kilns. C19. Squared coursed pennant sandstone. Two chambers to segmental arches with voussoirs, each c2m span and with central dividing wall cO.5m wide. Above the arches c2m height of coursed stone to rough top formed by soil and encroaching trees and shrubs. The two chambers, c2.5m deep, appear to have been formed in one hemi-cycle, with central divider, well vaulted in stone, various single square apertures. Total width c5m and height c4.5m built into earth slope, and much invaded by trees and shrubs. The kilns are at the edge of a former quarry, now also completely overgrown (September 1987).
