K6 Telephone Kiosk

The K6 telephone kiosk, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is a notable structure made of cast iron and glass. It is square in plan and features three glazed sides, including a door, while the rear side is solid. Each of the glazed sides has eight horizontal strips of glass with narrow margin lights on either side. The kiosk is topped with a Soane-inspired domed roof, which sits above four arched sides, each adorned with a crown in relief above a glazed panel that displays the word 'TELEPHONE'. The kiosk is painted red.

Inside, the kiosk contains modern telecommunications equipment. The K6 telephone kiosk was introduced in 1935 to commemorate the silver jubilee of King George V and is often referred to as the 'Jubilee Kiosk'. It represents an evolution of Scott's earlier K2 kiosk design from 1924 and is celebrated for its iconic status, showcasing a blend of Neoclassical design influenced by Regency architect Sir John Soane, adapted for a mass-produced object with modern functionality.

This K6 telephone kiosk in Northington Lane is designated for its significance as an iconic example of industrial design, reflecting Scott's innovative use of neoclassical forms for contemporary technology. It is well-positioned within the Awre Conservation Area, maintaining visual connections to nearby Fort House and Guy Hall Farm, both of which are also listed buildings.
